Lesson learned, the hard way

Lesson learned, the hard way

Those of you who listened to Episode 39 heard me mention that I spilled soda on my lappy. It is now just a matter of time until it dies. Water, or even coffee, would have been better than soda due to the acid in soft drinks. You may think the lesson I learned was, “Don’t put a glass of soda anywhere near your lappy”… but that’s because you only know half the story.

My friendly neighborhood IT guy told me to back up my lappy ASAP which I did as soon as I recorded the show last night. Within 45 minutes all my stuff was on my 300 GB hard drive. Then as soon as I finished… I dropped the drive… while it was spinning… from the table to the floor… 4 foot below. The drive and all 300 GB of graphics, sermon notes, photos, music and God only knows what else is gone.

The lesson I learned? I learned that there’s a difference between a backup drive and a portable drive.

I will never confuse the two again. Next time I will have a backup drive that never leaves my desk and only after I have made absolutely sure to protect it with a trained attack chinchilla will I then feel free to port about a 2nd drive for mobile storage purposes.

Please, dear Reader, do not repeat my mistake. It’s not fun crying over 1′s and 0′s.

But is your laptop still spinning? If it is, easy answer. Go get a smaller (physical size) drive back up your stuff. Western Digital passport series are great. This will serve as a temporary back up drive.

Then send the one you dropped on the floor in for RMA with Western Digital or whatever the drive is. Then when you get that one back, you will have your permanent backup drive.
