A compressor does 'simply' control your output volume... but it's one of the most important things you can do to improve the quality of your vocals. A limiter/compressor will leave your normal volume vocals alone, but if you laugh or raise your voice, it will 'compress' that volume to make it the same volume.

Every radio personality you ever hear uses one. Notice you don't have to turn up your radio when they whisper and turn it down when they rant and rave? That's a high-dollar compressor at work.

You can buy mixers with a built-in compressor, but I got mine for free, so I didn't want to spend the extra money on the mixer.

Do you NEED an in-line compressor? No. Because you can process your vocals (Dynamics Processing). But it will save you time in post-production... which is very important to me.

Interesting stuff! It's all new to me, so this might be a silly question, but what does the compressor do? I clicked on the link but couldn't make much out of the information on the web page. Is it simply for controlling your output volume? I know that this is only one way to set up but would you recommend having the compressor?
