In my opinion, the original High School Musical was very close to the perfect film. The second was a joke, but eventually enjoyable. This third one is going to the theaters… obvious that it’s just another cash in. Disney prints it’s own money.
The first movie won me over because it was about something. It has a great story… a moral… good music…. but the best part is… they didn’t have a flippin’ clue it was going to be so popular. Want proof? It took nearly a year for any merch to start spilling out onto Wal-mart shelves.
Someone sat in a meeting and said, "Hey, lets make a musical for an age group that has never had a musical targeted at it because they don’t like musicals. They did it, and it worked. Genius.
The second one, they forgot everything that made the first one great. They didn’t even try. It was like someone in a meeting said, "Hey, the kids really liked the ‘bad girl’ in the movie. Let’s revolve one around her! And let’s make the fat girl cute and pretty much Barbie everyone else all the heck up!" Bleh!
I mean the movie’s ending didn’t even make sense. Ryan hates his sister… so he goes and convinces Troy to sing with his sister after all, only to trick him into singing with Gabbie and her posse? They practiced through the whole movie for what? So they could all dance around like savages? Why wasn’t You Are The Music In Me the final song? Sharpe wins the flippin’ trophy? What!?! She didn’t even perform!
So what is HSM III going to be about? It’s senior year… so they’re going to be worried about getting separated. (What team? Wildcats! Get your head in the game!) IMDB.com says
they’re going to stage a Spring Musical (Music-cal!) to express their fears
. At least that sounds like a basic return to the deeper purpose of the original… dealing with struggles, social pressures and other real life junk (like in kindergarten Troy).
Am I looking forward to it? Yes. Will I go see it? With my wife and daughter, yes! I know you don’t care about HSM. I know you’re thinking I shouldn’t either. Well to bad for you! Because I learned from the first movie that it’s okay to bump the status quo (no no no!!!). I’m the playmaker!
After this one, maybe they’ll make HSM 4: The College Years. It’ll be better than Saved by the Bell: The College Years. 10 bucks!

I have a confession to make. I have seen every one of these movies. Yes, the first one was good because they weren’t intentional about getting rich. They wanted to make a good movie. The 2nd one, I agree, didn’t make any sense, but NEVER ended up likable to me. As for numbah 3, I’d rather die than watch it. I KNOW it will be bad.
The only problem with the “HSM4: The College Years” idea is that it’d be wierd to call it High School Musical at that point…at that point I guess you could call it getting back to reality. Ba-ZINGG!!!
But honestly, I’ve seen them…they do nothing for me. My sister seems to love it though.
Even though I am a guy, i watched the first one,, and didnt hate it that much. The second one was absolutely terrible, and I am not shelling out my money to go see it in theaters when I am sure it will be on Disney Channel eventually
Oh gosh. I saw the first one and barfed. Well, not literally. I say when you’re my age (10th grade) you shouldn’t be watching Disney Channel anymore. I just don’t get it.
Loved the first one, second one, not so much…but you bet I will be going to see the third one, I have two little girls that love anything to do with High School Musical. Ok, I admit, I’ll be going for me too!
