Man I Want A Mac (pro)

macpro

I’m in the market for a new home computer. I do podcasting, video and graphic design. The logical thing for me to do is to buy a Mac. I’ve never owned one… and to be honest, I’m a little scared about starting over and having to learn an entirely new platform. I’ll be a newb again!

The other issue is the cost. The Mac pro I want (http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MA970LL/A?mco=NzQ3Njkz) is listing at just over $7,000 bucks!!!

I emailed Scott Johnson over at ExtraLife Radio. It’s a podcaster and graphics guy, I figured he’d have some suggestions. He uses a hevily specked Mac Pro… but says I could get by with an iMac.

My friend Stephen says I can still use my favorite Windows apps in Mac… including my games… but I don’t know.

Any Mac peeps out there got any thoughts?

Though you can run windows apps “IN” OSX with something like vmware or parallels I wouldn’t recommend heavy games.

However with boot camp you actually reboot the computer in to a windows OS and run your games just as you would if it were a pc. I do this on my mac book pro and its amazing on performance.

I am a PC guy, have been for 12 years. But I have all the utmost respect for Macs. Considering what you do James, I would got for the Mac. I use a Mac for video editing and photo stuff. It really is better suited for what you do. And heck, if you don’t like it, just keep it booted in Windows! They really fly.

You might want to get a 2 button Windows mouse though, once you are used to right clicking, it’s near impossible to live without it.

Hey James I use a 15″ macbook pro for all the graphic designing I need. It handles CS3 great I did max out ram. I use Fusion to run Xp for things like msn video conferences with clients. Nothing much. For gaming I have an external HD and use bootcamp for all the games. So far they run smooth and not had a problem. I did have a 17″ back when the G4 came out problem with that was it was to heavy and bulky to really be a laptop also it ran very hot. Hope that helps

You won’t find the switch too difficult. My wife was hesitant at first and we put windows on with boot camp but we never touched it. She now loves our macs.

The best thing about Mac’s is the only thing you need to do to learn how to use it is to think simple. There are just less clicks to every thing and you have to remember that there won’t be as many places to go or things to click through.
